Despite their name Australian shepherds are not from Australia. This breed of dog was developed in California, Colorado, Wyoming, and Idaho to tend to the large flocks of sheep grazing there.
Modern day Australian shepherds are thought to have been created when Pyrenean Shepherd was bred with Border Collies and Collies.
How did toy and miniature Australian shepherds come to be?
Many people assume that due to their small size toy and miniature Australian shepherds must come from breeding a small dog with an Australian shepherd but that is not the case. Their small size comes from breeding small standard Australian Shepherds together. Toy Australian shepherds are classified as being 13.99 inches to 10 inches when measured at the shoulder. Miniature Australian Shepherds are from 17.99 inches to 14 inches.
Registered?
All of my dogs are registered and so your new puppy can be registered as well. Currently the only registry that acknowledges toy and miniature Australian shepherd is the American Stock Dog Registry (ASDR).
